When Grass Turns Blue: Anatomy of an Inevitable Regret

There is no defeat more bitter than the one forged by our own hands in a futile attempt to bend reality to our illusions.

Dear friend,

There is an ancient fable that holds one of the most lucid and essential lessons on the dignity of awareness and the proper stewardship of our inner energy.

It is said that one day, a donkey and a tiger found themselves walking the same path. Gazing across the clearing, the donkey turned to the predator and declared with absolute conviction that the grass was blue. Startled by such absurdity, the tiger calmly countered that the grass was green. The argument quickly escalated: the donkey dug in with blind obstinacy, while the tiger sought to uphold the plain evidence before them. Unable to find common ground, they resolved to bring their dispute before the lion, the wise sovereign of the wilderness.

Standing before the throne, the donkey spoke first, crying out emphatically: “Your Majesty, is it not true that the grass is blue?”

The lion looked upon him with unyielding composure and replied: “If that is how you see it, then the grass is blue.”

Emboldened by this apparent victory, the donkey pressed further: “The tiger continues to contradict me, provoking and unsettling my peace by insisting it is green. She deserves to be punished!”

Without hesitation, the king delivered his verdict: he sentenced the tiger to five years of absolute silence. Overjoyed, the donkey trotted off through the forest, brimming with pride and proclaiming aloud to the winds that the grass was indeed blue.

The tiger bowed respectfully before the decree, yet could not conceal her bewilderment. Stepping closer to the lion, she asked: “Your Majesty, I accept your judgment with reverence, but tell me: why have you punished me, knowing full well that the grass is green?”

The lion held her gaze and said: “Your punishment has nothing to do with the color of the meadow. I punished you because a creature as noble, strong, and discerning as you cannot afford the unforgivable waste of squandering precious time debating someone committed to illusion, nor can you disturb the sanctuary of the realm merely to seek confirmation of a truth that already stands on its own.”

This parable is far more than a moral fable; it mirrors what unfolds relentlessly across human lives.

We vividly recall the day, some years ago, when an unsettled soul stepped across our threshold. Seeking guidance, this person asked for clarity regarding deep life dilemmas and strategic directions that felt impossible to untangle. With precision and respect for subtler principles, we laid out the true reality of the situation: we illuminated where hidden pitfalls lay, exposed the hollow nature of transient illusions, and pointed out the solitary authentic path forward.

Yet, in those eyes, there was no openness to listen, only the defiance of obstinate pride. That person desperately wanted the grass to be blue. There was a relentless demand to bend reality to personal illusions, seeking validation for choices that were fundamentally flawed from the start. Confronted with the truth, conflict was chosen instead: arguing, raising objections, and trying to prove that sheer stubbornness could overpower the objective nature of reality.

In that exact moment, the silence of the tiger came to mind. We understood immediately that pushing further would demean our insight and squander vital focus. One cannot wage a battle against someone who has resolved not to see. We parted ways with calm restraint, leaving that individual entirely to their own free will, free to chase their mirage. Life, after all, is a teacher as patient as it is unrelenting.

Three long winters and three summers passed before the cycle ran its course.

When that same person reached out once again, the transformation was jarring. The former arrogance had vanished, replaced by an unmistakable shadow of disarray and an exhaustion visible in every movement. The illusions once so fiercely defended had crumbled, precipitating a painful and comprehensive unraveling. The consequences of those unchecked choices had arrived with surgical precision.

Sitting before us, stripped of armor and pretense, came the most painful confession of all: the bitter, hollow regret of lost time. Three years devoured by anxiety, missteps, and inner turmoil, simply for having refused to accept a clarity placed squarely before their eyes from the very beginning.

From our side, there was no malice, nor any petty desire to say “I told you so.” Reality had already spoken. Those who hold genuine clarity have no need to win fleeting arguments; they simply allow the dust of illusion to settle on its own.

The lesson is sovereign and clear. When you encounter someone insisting that the grass is blue, do not waste words. Do not offer your fire to those who collect only ash. Preserve your silence, safeguard your integrity, and let time and consequence do their necessary work.

Those who feel the quiet necessity to navigate their life’s path without succumbing to the traps of illusion always know where to reach us for a discreet, private dialogue.
